Another Look: Cage the Elephant

Cage the Elephant

Cage the Elephant

So, I’m actually going to do a bit of fanservice to the South here.  Because let’s face it folks…  Only two things have really come out of Bowling Green anyone actually gives a shit about.  Matt Sussman and Cage the Elephant.  In all honesty, I think most of America only likes one of them…

Enough on that dig to the king of the hill on another site I know of.  Let’s get to reviewing one of the more dynamic bands around, folks.  Time for the debut from Cage the Elephant…

Now, I’ll be honest, this review is going to be short, because…

  • I’m trying to get back into it.
  • Cage the Elephant’s album is a debut album
  • I’m not going to waste your time on this debut because you probably have heard them
  • I love bullet points…  point…

Oh, what I’m trying to get across is that like all current trends in music, CtE is a very ADD band.  In fact, if you’ve ever seen their videos…

The hit single above, folks. Ain’t No Rest for the Wicked, is quite a schizophrenic single. In fact, the video does prove that quite well. If you can keep up to sing along, you’re doing something. I’ll give you a hint, I am a musician. I can’t even keep a tune with this fucker.

In One Ear is another example of a completely schizophrenic video single you have to try to keep up with. The premise of the song, apparently, is about how the record labels wouldn’t even consider them. You listen to the song to determine how they express this. But yes, if you’re expecting a band to make sense, this ain’t your band.

A personal favorite song from that album, by the way, is James Brown… Again, laugh with me, people. The whole album is one you probably should play loud. You also shouldn’t worry about it making much sense. Some of us in the South really don’t. Look past that, please?

So, why should you pick up Cage the Elephant? Because it’s a fun 3 out of 4 effort. And we need to hear fun music again, folks.

  1. I think they sound like a less talented Kid Rock, but there’s no law saying we have to agree.

By the way, “Like a Feather” holds up phenomenally well. And I’m sure the video would too.

  2. My eyes doth swell with tears, to be mislabeled as a Kentuckian!
